Freight Class Chart 2026

All 18 NMFC classes on the 13-tier density scale · in effect since July 19, 2025 (Docket 2025-1) · free printable PDF

Density (lbs per cubic foot) — denser → cheaper

Bands include their lower bound: exactly 15.0 pcf is class 70; exactly 50.0 pcf is class 50. The five off-scale classes (77.5, 110, 150, 200, 500) are assigned to specific NMFC commodities — they cannot be derived from density.

Reading the chart

How many freight classes are there?

18 classes, from 50 (densest, cheapest) to 500 (lightest or most fragile, most expensive). Since July 19, 2025, 13 of them sit on the standard density scale; the other five (77.5, 110, 150, 200, 500) come only from specific NMFC commodity items.

What changed from the old chart?

The old 11-tier scale ended at "30 pcf and above = class 60". That band is now three: 30–35 = 60, 35–50 = 55, 50+ = 50. Charts that stop at class 60 cost dense shippers money. If a chart shows 77.5 at 13.5 pcf or 110 at 8 pcf, it is the retired pre-2025 version.

How do I use this chart?

Compute density — weight ÷ cubic feet, pallet and packaging included — then find the band. Or use the free freight class calculator and the NMFC code lookup.

Is freight class based only on density?

For most general commodities after the 2025 overhaul, yes. Items with handling, stowability, or liability concerns keep item-specific classes — check the NMFC item number.
